Aaron Phipps, GB Wheelchair Rugby Player and Hampshire County Council ambassador on his journey to London 2012

February 6, 2012

Howdy, how is everyone? What have we all been up to?

Here is my weekly update live and direct in HD (disclaimer – this is not actually live or in HD).

This week I attended the youth fixture rugby exchange program in Twickenham and have visited a few Hampshire schools, one of which put me through my paces in a training session.

The youth rugby fixture exchange program happens every year. Club managers and staff attend and spend the evening running round with pieces of paper organising friendlies. Just think of the stock exchange but everyone dressed in Rugby tops. I was really impressed mainly as it was all volunteers who had given up their evenings to arrange games for their club members. It was attended by over 300 clubs from across the South coast. I am going to give them a free plug it was that good http://www.fixex.com/ . Me and Team GB captain Steve Brown attended as they had kindly raised some money for the GBWR athlete support fund, few pics below.

School visits then. Requests have been coming in thick and fast, my diary is getting pretty chocker. So far I have visited Calmore Junior, St Marys Primary, Bentworth, Stoke Park Junior, Micheldever Primary and Hounsdown Secondary. It’s been great getting out and meeting lots of different young people.

At Hounsdown secondary I spent the morning with the BBC News School Report team. They asked me lots of questions for the BBC News School Report day which happens on 15 March 2012. They wanted to film me doing some training so we came up with the idea that the year 10 GCSE and BTEC PE pupils could design and implement a circuit training session for me. I was really put through my paces. It was four stations, a minute at each with a two minute rest between, so four on two off eight times. To my surprise they had a megaphone which they used to shout words of encouragement at me. It was good, so good in fact that I challenge any other secondary school to put me through my paces. Hounsdown have set the bar pretty high but if you feel you could do better give, or just want to have a go give me a shout.

Here are some pictures from the Twickenham event and my Hounsdown visit.

All the best Aaron
